Proposed New Ranking System - 11 November 2007

The new ranking system proposed by the Event Structure Review Group has been the subject of some discussion on Nopesport. You can see what the scores in the proposed system might look like here

Easier Submission of SportIdent .CSV results - 14 October 2007

SportIdent results in the .CSV file may now be submitted directly to make life a bit easier. However, the results need to be pre-sorted into classes so if your classes are all jumbled up then you still need to use Michael Napier's E-Tools program.

New BO website - 30 September 2007

The web link to the ranking system has been omitted from the new BO website and has been replaced by a copy of the full ranking list file. This means that many of the facilities are not available from the BO website. If you want a club list or a personal scores list you need to come via the ranking list home page and make sure you bookmark it for future use. It is also worth noting that the full ranking list on the BO website is out-of-date at present since the two most recent events (93 and 94) are missing.

End of year 2006 ranking list - 22 April 2007

Owing to popular demand (2 requests) I have made the end of year 2006 ranking list available as an alternative to the missing printed version which many of you used to receive. Since I never saw the paper version I don't know what the format was, but if you have any helpful suggestions on the format I may try to implement them.

Treatment of Local Members - 27 January 2007

In accordance with the decision of the British Orienteering Council, local members have been excluded from the ranking system with effect from the start of this year - see minutes of the Council meeting held on 23 September 2006 paragraph 60. This decision has received minimal publicity there being no mention in 'Focus'.

Update - 7 November 2006

Several information files have been updated to reflect changes in terminology.

Update - 23 May 2006

A major update has been carried out yielding a significant improvement in the treatment of the membership list. The comments on results submissions are much more informative. New members should be able to see their results straight away instead of having to wait for a membership list update.

Fixtures and Results - 14 May 2006

The fixtures and results page has been discontinued.

Update - 28 April 2006

A small update has been made to the way the system works. It should not be visible to the user but prepares the way for a significant improvement in the treatment of the membership list, yet to come.

New Web Site Again - 18 August 2005

The ranking system has been moved to a new website again - this time a local move. Please note the new URL which is http://ccgi.orienteering.plus.com/rankings - note the extra 'c'. The facilities should work as before, but initial tests seem to show it is a little slower than the previous site. Estimated slow down is a factor of more than 10 initially - but seems to be improving.

Badge Times Calculator - July 2005

The Badge Times Calculator program has been updated to cope with all the new classes (J, N, V, 80). It also recognises the inividual country codes (ENG,SCO,WAL,CYM,IRL,NI) in addition to GBR.

New Web Site - 7 June 2005

The ranking system has been moved to a new site, please note the new URL which is http://cgi.orienteering.plus.com/rankings. The facilities should work as before, but the link to the Badge Times Calculator needs fixing.

Failure Problems - 20 May 2005

The Ranking System is running into problems and may not work as expected. Hopefully this will be fixed within a few days. Finally resolved on 7 June 2005 after moving to a new site.

The Scottish Championships adjustment - 3 June 2004

The Scottish Championships were submitted twice. The second submission was probably intended to be an update of the first but ended up as a separate event. The first submission has now been removed.

Removal of Age 18 Classes - 28 April 2004

In accordance with a recent decision of BOF Council the age 18 classes have been suspended from the ranking list - for details see back page of FOCUS Issue 1/04 (March 2004).

New Competition Classes - 19 February 2004

This year has seen the introduction of new competition classes:

October Odyssey Results returned - 17 November 2003

The October Odyssey results were originally submitted on 17 October but had to be removed from the ranking list for a while because the event dates were incorrect (April and May 2003). The results were resubmitted on 12 November 2003 with the correct dates.

Adjustment to Small Class Calculation - 16 October 2003

A small improvement has been made to the way the scores are calculated for small classes.

Membership list update - 8 July 2003

Many of you have been worried recently about not being included in the rankings because the membership list used by the ranking system was out of date. A new membership list has now been installed so you you should now be included.

Some small improvements - 30 May 2003

The fixtures and results status page has not been working too well recently with many of the recent events missing. I have now fixed this, so hopefully it will work a bit better in future. It seems to be showing a reasonable list at present.

The format of the personal scores list has been improved for those with scores in more than one class, in that the classes are now separated.

Treatment of Junior Classes - 25 March 2003

Badge events will soon be shifting to new junior courses instead of the age classes. This will affect the junior rankings.

Downwards Points Drift Removed - 11 November 2002

The ranking list has been suffering from a downwards drift in the scores since its inception in 2000. A major update has been carried out in which all the scores for the current year were recalculated to eliminate the downwards drift. See more points for everyone for details.

New 18E Classes - 22 May 2002

The Ranking System has been modified to allow two new classes - M18E and W18E which first appeared at this year's BOC in Northern Ireland. The points gained in these classes will be treated as 18A points.

Two new pages - 15 May 2002

A fixtures and results status page has been set up to show the current status of recent events regarding availability of results on the World Wide Web. Another new page gives an introduction to the Ranking System for new members.

Qualifying Number of Events - February 2002

Previously, the qualifying number of events to get your name shown in the main list was set at three in order to keep the size of the list down. This has now been reduced to one causing the main list size to increase by about 30%. The qualifying number of events for the individual class lists remains at one.

Ranking List Accesses - January 2002

A plot of ranking list access rate over the world wide web is available covering the first two years of operation.

Masters Cup Competition - September 2001

Peter Guillaume (Chaiman of Fixtures Committee) has taken on the responibility for organising the Masters Cup Competition on an annual basis. He is drawing up a list of events up to the end of the year which will contribute towards this year's competition. The BNC and Beaudesert events held last winter are already included. The next events will be the National events at Macclesfield Forest and Newborough and some C3 events yet to be decided. For further details and results see the Masters Cup Competition page. Queries regarding the rules and fixtures of the competition should be sent to
Peter Guillaume.

Non-event not held on 31 July 2001

This event has now been deleted from the event list.

Modifications to the Ranking List System - 2 March 2001

A new system was installed on 2 March 2001. The main improvement for the user is the more informative pages giving details of the calculations for each event. Organisers should find that results submissions are significantly quicker and more informative. Also the old restriction on not updating details on the header line in the submitted results (event date, organising club etc) has been lifted. This has been made possible by using the event serial number to identify a re-submission. The ranking list calculations should be unaffected by the changes.

The 5% weighting for national events etc which was used in 2000 has been dropped from the beginning of 2001. The weighting factor has been replaced in the event list by an event status indication showing C1, C2 or C3. The C1 and C2 events will contribute towards an annual Master's Cup competition. It is intended that a web page showing the progress of the competition will be set up in due course.

You will also find after event 99 has been submitted that the event numbers cycle round so they will start at 0 again. This means that event reference numbers never need to be more than 2 digits. It is made possible because less than 100 events per year are submitted to the ranking list.

It is possible that the changes may have made parts of the system not work properly. If you have any difficulty with it please e-mail Mike with details of the problem.
